Get Moving with the Family After Dinner

Get Moving with the Family After Dinner

  • Go for a walk around the neighborhood. Grab comfortable shoes and get going. Take turns being the leader and take note of nature and your surroundings. Try to get in at least one mile.

  • Take your dog on a walk. The sight of an excited dog, wagging its tail in anticipation of a walk will put anyone in a good mood. This is also a good opportunity to show your kids how to be social and deal with others who may approach you and your dog to pet it. If you don’t have an area to walk close by, get in the car and take your family and pooch to a park. The fresh air, activity and interactions are good for all. Surprise your pet on the way home with a treat like a “Puppucino” from Starbucks or a Pup Cup from Dairy Queen. Check online for a full list of places that cater to canines. Don’t worry if you don’t have a pup, many of your neighbors would love for you to take their pet on a stroll. Just ask!

  • Walk on the track at your local middle or high school. Most are open during the early evening for the public to use. The track is an accurate way to measure your distance. Have the kids run the straight potion of the track and walk the curves

  • Move the furniture aside and crank up the tunes and have a dance-off with your family. Play songs from your era and then let the kids play their favorites. Moving to the groove for more than 30 minutes is a great workout.

  • Make it a game. Create a fit card deck that describes an exercise or series of moves. Each family member draws a card and performs the exercise until all cards have been used. Examples would be like 10 jumping jacks or 5 push ups. One could even be to give everyone a hug. You can also buy a ready-made set of exercise cards from FitDeck.

Resist the temptation to retreat to the couch after dinner. Get up, get going and make some memories with your family.
